Digital TV Recording On Your PS3... in New Zealand

Maybe we'll get to see it in the US market as well?
By Patrick Joynt

Speaking to New Zealand website The Press, Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand's Sales and Marketing Manager Warwick Light stated, "We're also hoping next year -- about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service -- to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder."

Freeview, a terrestrial TV broadcast system, is already live in the UK, and will be coming into New Zealand next year. This doesn't do much for those of us in the U.S., where Freeview isn't coming out anytime in the near future, but it does promise big things for the PS3. Beyond what enterprising do-it-yourselfers might be able to do, between the PSP's video-on-demand with UK provider SKY and this announcement, the future of TV on our PlayStation products is looking great. We expect an announcement for a US or European service at this year's Leipzig.

Sony's U.S. representatives weren't available for comment at the time of publication.
